My good friends Joe and Arahm who have recently returned from Standing Rock . . . The song that Joe loved and shared with me was Nahko Bear's song "Love Letters to God".

Joe prefers the acoustic version but I was not there to hear that one!  Many blessings to the water protectors who took a STAND!

Sergei Prokofiev . . . Music Genius! Russian Composor

Picture
According to wikipedia . . . Today Prokofiev may well be the most popular composer of 20th-century music.
The first concert performance of the work outside Russia was by the Dublin Orchestral Players under the direction of Brian Boydell on 9 June 1942 in Dublin, Ireland.[4]

Peter & the Wolf . . . 2nd Grade Music Class!

My 2nd grade teacher had us listen to the the entire piece, we were quiet and layed our heads down on our desk, closed our eyes and took a journey with Peter and learned the instruments too! I loved it!
History of Peter and The Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev

In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by Natalya Sats and the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children.

The intent was to cultivate "musical tastes in children from the first years of school".[1] Intrigued by the invitation, Prokofiev completed Peter and the Wolf in just four days.[2] The debut on 2 May 1936 was, in the composer's words, inauspicious at best: "... [attendance] was poor and failed to attract much attention".[3]

Childhood Memories and Songs of Endearment

I enoyed crafting a show around children and my friend Feliz made some recommendations, it got me thinking about the songs I consider lullabies.

There were songs from my childhood that ranged from Puff the Magic Dragon, Peter and the Wolf and Edelweiss.  My mother named me after the song "A Portrait of Jennie", my birth name is Jennifer Ann Donegan, but was affectionately known as Jenny.  My Dad had wanted to name me Martha after a family name, I think, I am happy with Jenny Donegan.  We have a new baby in the family, Adeline so a I asked her parents for a song to dedicate! "I am Jesus' Little Lamb" by Rain for Roots.
I learned Ei Nei on the ukulele named Gigi and played it for the super kitten Keiki aka KStar.  I hope you enjoyed and were remined the of the songs of your childhood.  Peace~  JenMarin
Here is the video that Feliz requested by Azam Ali, 'Lia, Lia'.

RARE BIRD - Bird on a Wing

Picture
"Rare Bird was one of the finest bands to emerge in the late sixties and early seventies. Their brand of keyboard-driven rock helped usher in the age of progessive rock. In later works, they blended in electric guitars while maintaining their keyboard driven leads to forge a unique and soothing progressive sound.

Their well crafted songwriting with a penchant for melody & harmonics created music that sounds as good and fresh today as it did in the seventies. Their music is enduring. Rare Bird formed in London, England in late 1969.

The original members were Graham Field on organ, Dave Kaffinetti on electric piano, Steve Gould on bass guitar and vocals, and Mark Ashton on drums. They began rehearsing in Graham Field's London apartment.

RARE BIRD-Beautiful Scarlet - 1970- LIVE

I love this live performance!!  The organ is out of the world and it is so fun to see them as an electical current vibing!!
Drumspiration too!

Reflections of My Life. . .  Now and Then

Lead singer Dean Ford takes us back on a journey with the song Reflections of My Life, interesting perspective and such a powerful message.

Guitar Solo Facts . . .
The guitar solo in Reflections of My Life, often referred to as “reverse” guitar solo, was a sixteen “bar” sequence (termed “measure” in the USA) featured in the recording by Junior Campbell, the band's lead guitarist.

"The song is in the key of G major and the solo was recorded thus:

The first 4 bars were recorded as normal, with Campbell playing a long “G” note, tied over from the last beat of bar 3, through bar 4, with slight feedback sustaining the long note.

The eight track tape was then turned over, and Campbell played against the reverse sound of the track, including his initial first four bars ensuring that he played another long “G” near the same point which could be cross-faded against the original – the tape was then turned over to normal setup, and he selected just 4 bars from the reverse recording which are bars 4-7 inclusive – this was cross-faded with the original at bar 4 – lhe then picked up from bar 8 through to bar 16 as normal, so in fact, only 4 bars are actually “reversed”.

The solo was played on his left-hand Gibson Stereo ES355 using a Sound City stack. " according to wikipedia sources.

NATURE BOY!! Nat King Cole and Pat Boone - Featuring EDEN AHBEZ

George Alexander Aberle, known as eden ahbez[1] (April 15, 1908 – March 4, 1995), was an American songwriter and recording artist of the 1940s to 1960s, whose lifestyle in California was influential on the hippie movement. He was known to friends simply as ahbe.

Ahbez composed the song "Nature Boy," which became a No. 1 hit for eight weeks in 1948 for Nat "King" Cole and has since become a pop and jazz standard.
Living a bucolic life from at least the 1940s, he travelled in sandals and wore shoulder-length hair and beard, and white robes. He camped out below the first L in the Hollywood Sign above Los Angeles and studied Oriental mysticism. He slept outdoors with his family and ate vegetables, fruits, and nuts. He claimed to live on three dollars per week.

All Vinyl Show. . . Great First Show!

I wanted to spin vinyl for my first show and I was really nervous! I knew I wanted to highlight Bob Dylan and his amazing legacy he has created.  He was my poet of choice when I did my college paper in poetry class, I blew the fellow classmates away when I came in with custom posters with lyrics and a boom box to play Going Going Gone.  I told them then in 2009 that I love Bob Dylan because he did not care what people thought of him and did not conform, staying true to his craft and spirit.  So, I was not surprise when he received the nobel prize for literature

Santana - Caravanserai

This was the first album I found in my quest to create a show with vinyl.  I was delighted, I opened the show with the song Eternal Caravan Of Reincarnation and then I added Song of the Winds to the set too!  Most listeners have most likely never been exposed to this unique album of Santana's, vintage 1972.  I love to expolore artists and see all the work they have created or shall I say unleashing the Magic!

QuickSilver Messenger Service - What About Me?

I have always loved this band, a true San Francisco Legend, I was so delighted when I reached to the top shelf and blindly pulled some vinyl for the show and my old friends showed UP!
Here is a video of a live performance of  "What About Me", which made it into my first show 2 times!

The lyrics are perfect!
              "The Revolution is at hand"
Quicksilver Messenger Service - What About Me
Recorded Live: 12/28/1975 - Winterland - San Francisco, CA

Dino Valenti - guitar, vocals
John Cipollina - guitar, vocals
Gary Duncan - guitar, vocals
Skip Olsen - bass, vocals
Michael Lewis - keyboards
Greg Elmore - drums

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Give  Me The Good Earth!

Wow!  This was the find of all!  I love Blinded By the Light . . .  but this is AMAZING!   "The Earth Band combines the stylistic approach of progressive rock with Mann's jazz-influenced Moog synthesizer playing and keen ear for melody. Beside producing their own material, a staple of the band's music and live performances from the beginning has been also relying on covers of songs by other modern pop/rock artists, notably Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, in their progressive rock style." "The album The Good Earth tapped into ecological concerns, a recurring theme in Mann's music in later years . . ."  I love the way they have mixed this song!  Rich with organic sounds found in nature with electric energy, love the Rooster!! Enjoy the Magic of Manfed!

Ramblin' Jack Elliot
I had the pleasure of meeting Ramblin' Jack Elliot at Rancho Nicasio in Marin County California, he lives out on that beautiful coastal area, very interesting man.  White Bird is somewhat of an anthem of mine, I love the Egret and that song is just precious.  Really love the song I picked of Ramblin' Jack's for the set, 1913 Massacre, because he sings it with such heart!

The main theme on this show was Freedom, freedom from the system, the greedy and break on through to the other side of Jim Morrison with his poetic verses of Truth in The American Prayer.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac Years

Marc and I are discussing Peter Green one of the most influential guitarist of our time as his influence can be heard in some of today noted guitarists.  We hope you enjoy learning about Peter Green and the original Fleetwood Mac.

The following is an exerpt from an article by Dave Swanson.

Guitar great and Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green was not a man without troubles, and on Jan. 26, 1977, his struggles landed him in prison and committed to a mental hospital.

Like the blues artists he loved, Green had his own share of despair. He was a somewhat fragile soul, and substance abuse didn’t help matters. Green and his bandmates were turned onto his drug of his choice — LSD — by the infamous Grateful Dead comrade, Owsley Stanley, while playing a date in San Francisco. The Mac were initially hesitant, but eventually dove in head first with Green in particular talking to it like a fish to water. Put another way, he found acid, then found God.

While on tour to promote their third album, ‘Then Play On,’ things came to a head. “Peter took some more drugs,” said Mick Fleetwood in the BBC documentary ‘Man of the World,’ “and never really came back from that.” Green was met by a group of people Fleetwood referred to as “the German Jet Set,” who whisked him away to a party following their show.

“It was a hippie commune sort of thing,” said Fleetwood Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer. “We arrived there, and [road manager] Dennis Keane comes up to me shaking and says, ‘It’s so weird, don’t go down there. Pete is weirding out big time and the vibes are just horrible.’” Green was already set to leave the band, but this was, as Fleetwood put it, “the final nail in the coffin.” Friends say Green was never the same after the Munich incident.
